Cancer Support Society (CANSUP) is a non-government, non-political and non-profit organisation dedicated to improve public health with special attention to prevention and treatment of cancer. CANSUP was founded on 3rd of November 2004 and has been registered with the Government. Currently the organization is working in Chittagong district with a vision to expand its activity throughout Bangladesh .
The organization has number of operational units, which work in their own unique fields. Those are:
i) Program management unit looking after organizing seminars, group discussions, awareness campaign and hands on training on health issues for health care professionals and patients.
ii) Media development unit taking care of producing audiovisual training modules, brochures, leaflets, advertisement and other IEC materials with special focus on cancer.
iii) Breast Cancer Clinic conducting screening, counselling and treatment for breast cancer.
iv) Tobacco cessation unit operating within Upazila Health Complex of Patiya.
v) Research unit conducting epidemiological survey on prevalence of cancer and its risk factors including tobacco usage, introducing cancer registry in the sub-district.
CANSUP, since its commencement, is dedicated to create mass awareness about cancer, its risk factors and its prevention. The organization developed cancer related educational materials and training materials for the primary health care providers in Bangladesh . CANSUP conducting a wide range of breast cancer awareness programs, both in urban and rural community. It is also conducting a baseline study on the prevalence of breast cancer, evaluating its risk factors and establishing a cancer registry in Patiya sub-district of Chittagong with support from WHO. CANSUP is operating a breast clinic at Patiya for early detection of breast cancer and to educate and train women on breast self-examination. The activities are being conducted through empowering the primary health care field workers in Patiya sub-district.
Tobacco being a major risk factor for development of cancer, recently CANSUP with technical assistance from WHO completed a baseline survey on knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of people about tobacco control law and the existing scenario of smoking in government facilities at Patiya. From this study CANSUP has acquired first hand experience on present tobacco control scenario in Patiya sub-district. Alarmed by study findings, CANSUP has started its journey for 'Smoke Free Patiya'.
CANSUP is also piloting 'Health Promotion' in Patiya Municipality with technical assistance from WHO. Along with anti-smoking campaign among the mass population living in municipal area, CANSUP is facilitating the activities of Tobacco Control Taskforce Committee in Patiya in order to make a tobacco-free environment in public places. CANSUP has taken the initiative to set up a tobacco cessation clinic in Patiya Upazila (sub-district) Health Complex for helping users to quit tobacco and is looking forward to extend the activities to community level. These activities are being conducted in close collaboration with Patiya Municipal Authority.
